Moxidectin is a member of the macrocyclic lactone group and a substance related to ivermectin. Moxidectin is used in therapy for the prevention of endoparasitic diseases in horses and dogs, does not penetrate the blood-brain barrier of mammals, therefore, cases of intoxication are rare and are exclusively associated with overdose or with breed characteristics of dogs (collies).
Moxidectin has an antiparasitic effect against nematodes and arachnoentomoses. Its main targets are glutamate-sensitive chlorine channels, as well as gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors. A change in the current of chlorine ions disrupts the conduction of nerve impulses, which leads to paralysis and death of the parasite.
