Pharmacological properties
A broad-spectrum anthelmintic.
Oxyclosanide is an anthelmintic from the group of salicylanilides. Inhibits the activity of succinate dehydrogenase and fumarate reductase, disrupts oxidative phosphorylation in cell mitochondria and ATP synthesis, which causes impaired mobility, impaired energy processes and death of parasites. Oxyclosanide acts:
- trematodocidal on mature and larval forms of Fasciola hepatica, F. gigantica, Paramphistomum ichikawai, Liorchis scotiae, Dicrocoelium lanceatum, Eurytrema pancreaticum;
- ested in Moniezia expansa, M. denedeni, Avitellina centripunctata, Stilesia globipunctata, S. hepatica, Thysaniezia giardiа;
- insect-larvocidal on larvae of Hipoderma bovis, H. lineatum, Oestrus ovis, Crivellia silenus, Cephalopina titillator.
Fenbendazole is an anthelmintic from the group of benzimidazoles. Binds the structural protein (tubulin) of the microtubules of the cell skeleton, which leads to inhibition, division and secretory processes in the cells of parasites, as well as the absorption of glucose, which falls out in the form of glycogen stores. Blocking energy processes causes paralysis, death and excretion of parasites from animals. Fenbendazole is active against adult forms of gastrointestinal nematodes and lungs. Due to the ovocidal action reduces the infestation of pastures with helminth eggs.
Oxyclosanide is slowly absorbed, the maximum concentration in the blood of sheep and cattle is observed after 24 hours. Almost completely (> 99%) binds to plasma proteins, is metabolized in the liver and up to 80% is excreted in the bile and feces, the rest – in the urine, less than 0.1% – in milk. The half-life is approximately 7 days.
Fenbendazole is slowly absorbed and it is desirable that it stays in the scar as long as possible. It is metabolized in the liver to sulfoxide derivatives identical to oxfendazole and benzimidazole, which can return to the scar, where they are transformed into fenbendazole by bacteria. This increases the bioavailability of fenbendazole in ruminants. It is excreted mainly in the feces.
In cattle and sheep, almost 35% of fenbendazole is excreted unchanged and approximately 5% as metabolites 6 days after oral administration. A small amount of metabolized fenbendazole is excreted in the urine. Excretion in goats is twice as fast as in sheep.
Method of application and dosage
The drug is given to animals once on the root of the tongue before morning feeding in the following doses:
- cattle, camels, buffaloes – 0.5 g per 15-20 kg of body weight (1 tablet weighing 5 g per 150-200 kg of body weight);
- sheep, goats – 0.5 g per 10-20 kg of body weight (0.5 tablets weighing 1 g per head of young animals weighing 10-20 kg, 1 tablet weighing 1 g per head of animals weighing 30-40 kg).
Reservation
After the last application of the drug, slaughter of animals for meat is allowed after 14 days. Meat obtained before this date is disposed of or fed to non-productive animals, depending on the conclusion of the veterinarian. Milk can be eaten by people in 2 days, by this time it should be fed to young animals.
