Competitively blocks the sorption of PABA and prevents its inclusion in the dihydrofolic acid molecule (inhibits dihydropteroate synthetase), decreases the formation of tetrahydrofolic acid, and then the synthesis of purine and pyrimidine bases, nucleic acids.
When ingested, it is mainly retained in the intestines (absorbed slightly), where a high bacteriostatic concentration is gradually created. Inhibits the growth of Escherichia coli and reduces the synthesis in the intestine of thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, etc.
