Pharmacological properties
ATC-vet classification code: QP52, veterinary anthelmintic drugs (QP52AA01, praziquantel) QP54, endectocides (QP54AA01, ivermectin)
The action of the drug is determined by the active ingredients – ivermectin and praziquantel.
Ivermectin, which belongs to the group of macrocyclic lactones, enhances the connection of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) with special receptors on the nerve endings of the parasite, blocking nerve impulses, which in turn leads to paralysis and death.
Praziquantel is active against cestodes (tapeworms) and some types of trematodes, increases the permeability of membranes for calcium ions, causes an increase in muscle activity, which is changed by muscle contraction and spastic paralysis, and causes destruction of the outer cover of adult cestodes.
In recommended doses, it has no teratogenic and embryotoxic effects.
Application
Treatment and prevention of equine diseases caused by:
cestodes: Anoplocephala perfoliata (adult forms);
large strongylids: Strongylus vulgaris (adults and larval stages); Strongylus edentatus (adults and larval stages); Strongylus equinus (adult stages); Triodontophorus spp. (adult stages); Craterostomum acuticaudatum (adult stages);
small strongylides (including those resistant to the active ingredients of benzimedazole): Coronocyclus spp. (adults and larval stages); Cyathostomum spp. (adults and larval stages); Cylicocyclus spp. (adults and larval stages); Cylicodontophorus spp. (adults and larval stages); Cylicostephanus spp. (adults and larval stages); Parapoteriostomum spp. (adults and larval stages); Petrovinema spp. (adults and larval stages); Poteriostomum spp. (adults and larval stages);
pulmonary nematodes: Dictyoculus arnfieldi (adults and larval stages);
other nematodes: Trichostrongylus axei (adult stages); Oxyuris equi (adults and larval stages); Onchocerca spp. (adult stages); Strongyloides westeri (adult stages); Habronema muscae (adult stages);
Ascaris: Parascaris equorum (adults and larval stages);
oesterides: Gasterophilus spp. (oral and gastric forms).
Dosage
The drug is administered orally at a dose of 1 ml per 100 kg of body weight (respectively 200 μg of ivermectin and 1 mg of praziquantel per 1 kg of body weight).
On the plunger of the syringe of the tube, rotate the grooved ring in such a way as to fix its lower part at the mark corresponding to the animal’s body weight. Remove the protective cap, insert the cannula of the syringe of the tube into the animal’s oral cavity in the space between the teeth and carefully squeeze the appropriate dose of paste onto the root of the tongue. After the introduction, for a few seconds, bring the head up and make sure that the animal has swallowed the dose of the drug.
