Pharmacological properties
Carprofen belongs to the group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, has a pronounced anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effect.
Carprofen, like other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, is an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase in the arachidonic acid cycle. At the same time, inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis in dogs is insignificant compared to the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of carprofen. Given that inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis is thought to be the cause of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, the slight effect of carprofen on prostaglandin production may explain the lower gastrointestinal toxicity and renal function in dogs. The exact mechanism of action of carprofen has not been elucidated.
At a therapeutic dose for 8 weeks, carprofen did not have an adverse effect on articular cartilage in dogs. In contrast, in vitro therapeutic concentrations of carprofen enhanced the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) in articular cartilage chondrocytes in dogs.
Stimulation of GAG synthesis reduces the difference between the rate of degenerative and regenerative processes in cartilage, which slows down the reduction of cartilage in the joint.
Application
Treatment of dogs with inflammatory and painful phenomena, acute and chronic diseases of the musculoskeletal system (osteoarthritis, degenerative diseases of the joints), for analgesia and as an anti-inflammatory agent in the postoperative period.
Dosage
Orally in a dose:
the initial daily dose is 2-4 mg of carprofen per 1 kg of body weight. It is recommended to divide the daily dose into two parts. After seven days of treatment, depending on clinical indications, the daily dose can be reduced to 2 mg per 1 kg of body weight per day.
The duration of treatment depends on the clinical condition of the animal. Long-term treatment should be under the constant supervision of a veterinarian.
Due to the pleasant taste, dogs eat pills well.

Do not use in cats.
Do not use together with other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Do not use in animals with diseases of the heart, kidneys and liver, pathological changes in the blood, as well as animals at risk of gastrointestinal ulcers and bleeding.
Reservation
Use in dogs under 6 weeks of age or older dogs may be an additional risk. If treatment for such dogs is necessary, the dosage should be reduced and therapy should be under the supervision of a veterinarian.
Dogs in a state of dehydration, hypovolemia or hypotension should be avoided as this increases the risk of nephrotoxicity.
Concomitant use of potential nephrotoxic drugs should be avoided.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may inhibit phagocytosis, and appropriate concomitant antimicrobial therapy should be used to treat inflammatory processes associated with bacterial infection.
