The active substance of the drug is ivermectin, which belongs to avermectins. Ivermectin enhances the formation of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in presynaptic neurons. GABA acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter and blocks postsynaptic excitation of an adjacent neuron in nematodes or muscle fibers in arthropods. By stimulating the formation of GABA, ivermectin causes paralysis and death of parasites.
Ivermectin is active against adult gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematodes, their larvae, scabies mites, lice. The drug is effective against gastrointestinal nematodes (adults and larvae of the fourth stage), pulmonary nematodes, ocular nematodes (adults), gnats (parasitic stage), lice, scabies mites: in cattle – Ostertagia ostertagi, Ostertagia lystrongi, Haem axei, Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Cooperia oncophora, Cooperia punctata, Cooperia pectinata, Bunostomum phlebotomum, Oesophagostomum radiatum, Strongyloides papillosus (adults), Nematodirus helvetianus (adults), Nematodirus spathiger (adults). When administered subcutaneously, ivermectin has a high bioavailability. The drug is slowly absorbed, well distributed throughout the body, but does not penetrate into the cerebrospinal fluid, which reduces its toxicity. High concentrations of ivermectin have been found in the skin, ears and earwax, eyes, indicating that the drug should be effective in the treatment of ectoparasites.
The drug is metabolized in the liver by oxidation and primarily excreted in the feces, less than 5% of the drug is excreted in the urine (half-life for cattle is 2-3 days, for pigs 0.5 days, for sheep 2-7 days).
