Pharmacological properties
Oxytocin is a peptide hormone that enhances the contraction of the smooth muscles of the uterus, bile and urinary tract and intestines. Reduces the mammary epithelial fibers of lactating animals and releases milk secretion. Its effect is enhanced by estrogen, so it has the strongest effect in the follicular phase of the sexual cycle.
Application
Cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs, dogs, cats.
To stimulate childbirth with weak and insufficient uterine contractions (use only when the cervix is open); with atony of the uterus after childbirth; with postpartum uterine bleeding; with remnants of the placenta; in postpartum endometritis; with uterine prolapse; at the pyometra; hypogalactia and agalactia after childbirth (for the “release” of milk); in mastitis (to remove milk and inflamed milk secretions before the introduction of drugs into the mammary glands).
Dosage
Intramuscularly or subcutaneously
- Cows, horses – 2-6 ml
- Sheep, pigs – 1-3 ml
- Dogs – 0.2-1 ml
- Cats – 0.3-0.5 ml
Intravenous (slow, intravenous with 5% glucose)

Contraindication
Do not use as an aid in childbirth unless cervical dilation is confirmed.
Do not use in cases of abnormal fetal position.
Do not administer to animals with dystocia (difficult birth) due to abnormal fetal position. Inject only when the uterus is fully open. Oxytocin should not be administered in different ways and at the same time with drugs that have the same effect.
