PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
ATC vet QP52 – veterinary anthelmintic drugs
Antihelmin-VS is a combined preparation, which includes pyrantel pamoate and praziquantel. The action of the drug is due to the action of the above components, which provide a wide range of anthelmintic effects on all phases of the development of round and tapeworms that parasitize dogs and cats.
Pyrantel pamoate (a group of tetrahydropyrimidines) is active against nematodes (round helminths), affects their cholinergic receptors, which leads to irreversible spastic paralysis of parasites. Pyrantel pamoate is almost not absorbed from the intestine and due to this, its anthelmintic effect is prolonged. It is excreted from the body mainly unchanged (93%) with faeces.
Praziquantel is a synthetic compound derived from quinoline. Active against cestodes (tapeworms), increases the permeability of membranes for calcium ions, causes an increase in muscle activity, which changes with muscle contraction and spastic paralysis, causes destruction of the outer cover of adult cestodes. Both in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that praziquantel causes damage to the shell of the parasite, leading to spasm and paralysis. There is an instant tonic spasm of the parasite muscles and rapid vacuolization of the syncytial membrane. This rapid spasm is caused by changes in divalent cation currents, in particular calcium.
Praziquantel is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and reaches its maximum plasma concentration in 1-3 hours. Bioavailability is about 80%. It is distributed in the organs and tissues of the animal and binds to blood proteins. It is excreted from the body with urine and in a small amount with feces.
The drug is highly effective for nematodosis: Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati, Toxascaris leonina, Ancylostoma spp., Uncinaria spp., Trichuris vulpis and cestodozah: Taenia spp., Dipylidium caninum, Echinococcus granulosus, Echinococcus (Alveococcus) multilocularis, Mesocestoides spp., Diphyllobothrium latum.
In recommended doses, it does not have a sensitizing, embryotoxic and teratogenic effect.
INDICATIONS FOR USE
Treatment and prevention of nematodes in dogs and cats from three weeks of age: Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati, Toxascaris leonina, Ancylostoma spp., Uncinaria spp., Trichuris vulpis and cestodes: Taenia spp., Dipylidium caninum, Echinococcus granulosus, Echinococcus (Alveococcus) multilocularis , Mesocestoides spp., Diphyllobothrium latum.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
The drug is used individually for animals, added once when feeding in the morning with a small amount of food or injected forcibly on the root of the tongue using a measuring beaker or a syringe without a needle at a dose of 1 ml per 2 kg of body weight.
The suspension must be shaken before use!
