Pharmacological properties:
ATCvet Classification Code: QN05CM – Other veterinary hypnotics and sedatives.
The drug has a sedative, analgesic effect, and also acts as a muscle relaxant.Β Xylazine is an Ξ±2-adrenergic agonist.Β The drug acts on the central nervous system by activating Ξ±2-adrenergic receptors, which leads to a decrease in the release of norepinephrine.Β By stimulating Ξ±2-adrenergic receptors, xylazine has analgesic and sedative effects.Β Also, the drug causes relaxation of skeletal muscles by blocking the intraneural transmission of impulses in the central nervous system.
Application:
For premedication before surgery, as a sedative for aggressive animals before examination and transport, to relieve pain in cattle, horses, sheep, dogs and cats.
Dosage:
Intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous.
Cattle – intramuscularly:
- Dose I – 0.25 ml of the drug per 100 kg of animal body weight – for sedation, slight relaxation, moderate analgesia for small operations.
- Dose II – 0.5 ml of the drug per 100 kg of animal body weight – causes moderate sedation, muscle relaxation and analgesia, which are sufficient for small operations on milking, hooves (panaritium) and others.Β The ability to stand is retained.
- Dose III – 1 ml of the drug per 100 kg of animal body weight – a strong manifestation of all effects;Β used for complex surgical interventions, in combination with additional local or local anesthesia.Β The ability to stand is not preserved in most cases.
- Dose IV – 1.5 ml of the drug per 100 kg of animal body weight – should be administered only in exceptional cases, after preliminary fasting for several hours, in very painful or prolonged operations, as well as to achieve a longer period of sedation and especially strong muscle relaxation …Β This dose is used in individual cases.
